Almost Vacation time ...

Vacation time is fast approaching. I'm looking forward to having some time off again. I leave for San Diego on July 1.

In other news my computers graphics card broke a few days ago. I am using my backup card. This has inspired me to build a new computer. I looked at reviews and have decided on what I'm going to buy so I can build it myself.

I listened to the new Offspring album, there are several good songs on it.

Changes at work ...

Well, yesterday my boss announced she is leaving to take a position somewhere else. Her last day was to be on the 30th. Then for some reason she ended up leaving today instead. I got along with her well which was nice. I will look forward to now being able to learn from others, and to the possibilities this may provide for me to grow.

Starting tomorrow I am going to take over as the interim IT manager. I hope I can do well in this roll. I plan on working hard and applying for the permanent position as it is posted. I love the work I do, and enjoy the people I get to work with, and I Love where I live.

A June Post

So I feel like I should post something, but I have nothing in mind to post. Nothing new or exciting is going on at work. The cubs still keep on winning. There is nothing happening in my personal life either. It is really pretty boring.

I did order a new Center Channel speaker for my surround sound. It should be better than my current cheap one, but I don't know if I'll notice a difference.

I made a doctor's appointment for later this month to see if I can get a cortisone shot in my knee so I can move around a bit more while I am in San Diego, Arizona, and Chicago.

Command Line Web (Goosh)

I have a new home page now. www.goosh.org it is a command line shell for google. The commands are easy to pick up, and I think it is fun to use, although I am a computer nerd who runs linux.

One thing I would like to see added is a math module for simple math and conversions, like converting pounds to ounces, etc. The regular google does a good job at that.

Weezer (Red)

I got the new weezer Album today. I always like it when something arrives in the mail early. the album is officially out tomorrow. Included with my order from interpunk.com is a free 7" vinyl with 2 songs on it - "Pork and Beans" and "Are friends Electric". I'll give it a spin after I go through the CD a few times...

Cubs keep on winning ...

As of right now the Cubs have the best record in all of baseball. They just finished a sweep of the Dodgers, and took the first game from the Rockies. Hopefully they can keep playing well like they have. There is still a lot of baseball left.

Roku player and memorial day

I had a good time over memorial day. I golfed a couple of times, but did really bad.

When I got back I received my Roku nexflix player. It was easy to set up, and the quality was just fine.

Tornadoes, Snow, and posting in the dark ...

Well today was adventurous. This afternoon we had a few tornadoes touch down in Laramie. Then later in the evening we got about an inch of really wet snow. And now I am tying this message on battery power as I have no electricity. I love being able to go online without power. I have a good battery that gives me 30 to 45 minutes of computer time.

Lets see what tomorrow will bring.

Netflix Player ...

I have been using Netflix for a few months, and have really liked it. Today I learned that they are offering a $100.00 box that you connect to your TV and use to watch any of the streaming content available from Netflix. Detail here.

This is perfect for me because even though netflix lets you stream to your computer, you have to be running windows to do it and I run Linux. I don't have to worry about that anymore. I also get to watch the movies on my TV instead of my computer monitor.

I think I will order one of these devices soon.

More snow in May

We've had a cold spring, and this morning when I awoke there was over 2 inches of snow on my car. It was a nice wet snow, and we can use the moisture. I am still waiting for spring to arrive...

Lollapalooza 2008

So I was browsing around reading about music items, and I noticed that rage against the machine is scheduled to play at lollapalooza along with radiohead and many others; good bands too. It takes place in grant park in Chicago ... hmmm August 1-3 Very interesting I will be in Chicago for cubs baseball on the 4th and 5th of august... I think I may have to come in a few days early and enjoy the show! I think I will finalize my chicago trip to include a huge concert, and cubs baseball.

Tickets are a bit pricy now - $190.00 for the three days, so I'm still contemplating that.

Punk Rock Show conflict

So I recently bought tickets to see Rancid on July 26th at the fillmore. I found out a few days ago that there is another good show on that same day. The offspring and Dropkick Murphy's are playing a show with a few other bands. It's to bad they have to be on the same day. Rancid wins this contest - I like them more. I did also see Dropkick less than a month ago.

I am still thinking about seeing the cure on May 21st at Red rocks, but don't really want to go by myself. I may also drop down to Denver this Friday and catch NOFX. I'd like to see Pennywise on the 7th, but can't really take the time off from work, and hate not getting any sleep.

Denver trip

Here is a great shot of the City park golf course in Denver. We had a great time watching the cubs and golfing in Denver, and eating at some good places too. I tries Ruth's Chris steakhouse. It was a very good steak. probably in the top 5 on my all time list.

Last night the cubs won in an exciting game that went extra innings. This morning we tried to go golfing, but were denied. the course was closed for aeration. Access Denied.

Rancid Concert and other music news ...

I just bought tickets to see Rancid on Saturday July 26th at the Filmore in Denver. This will be my 5th time seeing Rancid. They are supposed to have a new album out in June. Weezer also has an album due out in June.

In other music news I just ordered the new Pennywise album. They have a limited edition (2500) double LP (vinyl) that I ordered as well as the CD. Goldfinger has a new album that will be out on April 22, and Millencolin's album will be out on May 6th. I listened to a few tracks from Millencolin and I really liked it. I also listened to a track from Pennywise that was really good.

I still need to buy Accelerate from R.E.M. I really like the song "Mr. Richards" and several others. I though of buying the new counting crows, but I only like half the album and find several songs very annoying so I might not purchase it.

Speaking of music I had some ideas of why when people get older they stop discovering new music, and stick with their old stuff. I find it hard to keep up with all the bands I like now, and figure out when shows are, when new albums are coming, etc. It really takes some dedication of time to follow bands, not to mention time to listen to them. Perhaps by the time we are in our 30's our time is limited and our current music followings are large enough that it doesn't leave time to discover and follow new bands. That is how I feel. I enjoy when bands I like come out with new music, and I'm sure there are new bands I would like, but I have just enough time to keep up with my current selection...

Well we were treated with 6-8 inches of snow last night. As I look out my office window (Yes I have an office, and a window. In fact I have a corner office with 4 windows) anyway It is still snowing.

Hot Wings ... Part 2

Success.

The wings tasted good, I really liked the sauce. Here are some pics and the recipe I came up with:

Cut wings at joints, discard the tips. Rinse the wings off in water and pat dry with paper towels. dredge lightly in corn starch and remove excess. Fry at 375 for 10-12 minutes until done. (I like to use a wok and fry 6-8 at a time)


The Sauce:
combine in small sauce pan the following:
1/2 C Franks Red Hot - plus several extra shakes
1/2 C butter
2 tsp sugar
1 tsp white wine vinegar
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp white pepper

bring to a simmer and stir well. pour over wings in a large bowl and toss to coat. Serve and enjoy.

Hot Wings ... Part 1

So Jason asked me to make some hot wings - I've never made them before, but how hard can it be ... I came up with some ideas for the sauce, then went and read other recipes online, and my ideas seem to be right on.

I may even measure what I put in the mix in case someone wants to follow. I don't think they will be super hot, but should be tasty.

Vista SP1 imaging ...

So I was hoping that with the release of SP1 Microsoft would fix the computer name / domain issue with deploying an image, but Even with WAIK for vista sp1, and the Vista with SP1 DVD, I still can't get it to work correctly. With a * I can get a random name that joins the domain, without the * it doesn't prompt for a name, it tries a random name, but fails to create the trust account.

I at least have a working image I can use now though, even if it does generate a random name. Also winpe takes WAY to long to load. It does drop the image on the machine quickly.

Anyway that is what my day has been today. Computers ...

Tomorrow I deploy our final Server 2003 box, after that all new server will be server 2008.

Chicago Cubs tickets went on sale today. I bought tickets for August 4th in the bleachers, and August 5th along the right field wall.

I also got tickets for the cubs @ rockies on April 23 and 24th - one day in the outfield and one in the box seats.

The MTN on Directv - Aug 1

Today or tomorrow they are supposed to have an official announcement that Directv will be Carrying the Mountain West Sports Network (MTN) starting August 1, 2008.

Everyone in the country will have the opportunity to watch the cowboys play - including me. It is about time, and GO POKES!

10 days

10 days until the first spring training game for the cubs. All players are reporting by today.

I have today off from work. I think I will put on some records and clean a few things.

100 Years ...

Pitchers and catchers have now reported for Spring training, and the cubs begin their 100th year without a championship.

I think I have decided on attending games around August 4th. Tickets go on sale a week from tomorrow. You never know - This could be the year!

Superbowl, and other stuff

I was glad that NY beat the patriots to win the Superbowl yesterday. it was a great football game. Most of the commercials sucked.

The groundhog saw his shadow the other day, so more winter for us. It is snowing right now here in Laramie.

President Hinckley's passing

President Hinckley passed away last night around 7:00 pm. Even though he was 97 years old it was still kind of surprising. As one often does at a time like this I reflected on his efforts as a prophet, and the several times I got he hear him speak live, and meet him.

I also think forward to how another prophet will continue to lead us. I have always like President Monson, and look forward to hearing him speak as the prophet.

Well i started a third blog. New DVD Burner

I received my new DVD burner today and installed it. I have no DVD's to burn at the moment though. i got a Pioneer 20X burner. It is replacing an old Sony 4x burner.

I received my new university of Wyoming License plates today, and installed them on my car. They look nice.

After Christmas Post

I spent Christmas in Nebraska, and had a good time other than getting sick. I finally finished my book, and gave copies away as gifts to my family.

I'm back in Laramie and back to work now. Last night I put together my new piece of furniture; a credenza / buffet. I still haven't decided on the exact placement for it.

The cowboys finally return home with a game tomorrow afternoon.

Updates ...

Well Vista has been OK. It is slower when working with files over a network. I tried to copy a few MB worth of files from one network share to another, and it sat for over 5 minutes "calculating the time required". I clicked cancel and logged into XP, and had it done in a few seconds. I also sometimes get errors when I try to rename a file on a network share saying that the folder doesn't exist. Other than those two big issues it has been fine.

In other happenings I have my Christmas shopping completed. I'm hoping I can get the gifts out by Christmas, but they have to arrive to me first.

Vista at work

I finally switched over to using Windows Vista at work. I had put it off for a while. I guess its ok, although I still have my XP machine for when I have to administer exchange and active directory stuff.

Cowboys lose to SDSU

We looked OK in the first half, up 21-0 at one point, but we quit playing offense in the second half.

That was some of the worst play calling I've ever seen. I think UW needs to make a change at offensive coordinator.

Pokes win - plus crazy football play

The pokes fell behind, but played well the second half to beat UNLV 29-24. Meanwhile the rockies lost again Boston is 1 game away from another world series championship.

I ran across this video from a DIII game today. They lateral the ball over and over (about 15 times) and finally score a TD to win. all it lacked was the band on the field...

Final post from vegas

well this is my fina post from vegas. I fly home tomorrow night. the week went by fast.

I saw Penn and Teller on tuesday. my seats were front row center, and the show was great. I got to meet them afterwards and had them sign my program.

I've eaten at a variety of places. I had Italian at antonios including a salad with an 15 year old balsomic. I tried the carnival world buffett, but didn't like it much. The quality was pretty low especially compared to the other food I had. Tonight I ate at boa steakhouse. I started with a lobster bisque, then I had a 40 day dry aged new york strip steak. The steak was great, but im not sure I like lobster bisque much.

update from vegas

Todays classes were better than yesterday. I learned many things. We got a free lunch, which was pretty good and i go a few free swag items. this evening we had cocktails and hourderves. People seem to like free alcohol. I ate a bunch of wings. Now I'm getting ready for Penn and Teller.

hello from vegas - day 1

I just finished my 1st day of training. I guess I knew a lot more than I thought because I didn't learn a ton of new things. I did pick up enough to make it worthwhile.

Last night I ate at Delmonico Steahouse; Emeral's restaurant. I had bbq shrimp then a ribeye steak. for dessert I had some pecan pie. It was all very good, and quite expensive. That was the most I've ever spent for a meal.

I guess I ned to go find something to do tonight. See you tomorrow.

Cowboys Win - now 4-1

The cowboys jumped out to a 24-6 lead, then hung on to beat TCU 24-21. Sitting at 4-1 is nice right now. After the game Kelli called and I met her and her sister and sisters husband at Corona village for dinner. It was nice to catch up and hang out like old times. I miss having some of my old friends around.

Server Crash

Just as I loaded rhoades.org to my server it crashed. so both Laramieweb.com and Rhoades.org are down for a bit. I guess thats what I get for running windows. I will install Linux on the server now. I don't know if I'll be able to get all the pictures off Laramieweb.com, I'll give it a try, but I think there are copies of everything if I can't easily get them off.

It is getting closer...

Wonderful Wyoming

Today after work I drove a couple minutes up in the mountains and had some hot dogs and smores. On the way up we saw a few deer crossing the road.

After we were finished we started driving back and saw 4-5 Elk including a nice Buck with a large rack. About a minute down the road we then saw two Moose - A mother and her calf.

It was a great reminder of one of the things that makes Wyoming great. A few minutes out of town and we have the full array of wildlife.

Cubs win! magic # is 15

The cubs won tonight over the cards, and the brewers lost again. The cubs magic number to clinch the division is 15. With a double header tomorrow the cubs can bury the cards (now 6 out), and inch closer to the division win.

Time for another update

Well things are going ok. They cowboys are 2-0 heading to play BSu this Saturday night and the cubs are tied for first place again.

I am in the process of staring a business. Our target launch date is November 1, 2007.

We will be doing computer consulting. I will give the business name and logo etc. after we go through the legal stuff of forming an llc, etc.

Cubs extend lead

The cubs extended their lead last night to 1.5 games over the brewers and 4 games over the cards.

I picked up several new albums last night - now I need more time to listen to them.

One week until Football

We are getting ever closer to the football season. it should be lots of fun. I went and watched the pokes final scrimidge on Wednesday. We looked good in some areas, and need work in others. Next week should go by nice and quick too. I am in Denver on Tuesday for a conference, then am off Wednesday for a doctor appointment for my knee.

I am really liking my new phone. It is nice to have Internet access when I want it, and instant email.

Finally a new phone.

I ordered a new cell phone today. I am replacing my Motorola e815, which has served me well, but broke last weekend when I got caught in the rain. My new phone is the Motorola Q. Along with the new phone I am changing up my plan. I am getting the family plan with 1400 minutes, and adding a data plan for my Q. My sister is going to switch her phone over on my plan and share the minutes with me.

I got a good deal on the phone, and the plan rate isn't bad either. it helps that I get an 18% discount because of where I work. The phone should arrive tomorrow.

Back from Denver

I got back from my trip to Denver last night. I had a good time. We stayed at the adams mark hotel on 16th street. It is a fairly nice hotel, and we got a great price. The cubs won the first two games, but lost the third.

On Friday We golfed 9 at the JFK course, and on Saturday played 9 on a small par 3 course in Englewood. The golf was fun.

We didn't eat anywhere to fancy. We had lunch at rodizio's on Friday, and ate at ESPNZone on Saturday before the game.

We got caught in some rain while golfing friday,and my phone got wet, and will no longer charge. I guess its time for a new phone. I'm going to go with the Motorola Q I think. My other option is the blackberry 8830.

In short this is just a compilation CD. But instead of just picking a track because I liked it I decided to try and pick tracks for their lyrical content. I have picked out the lyrics that seem to have some meaning to me, and arranged them by song. I suggest you get the songs and listen to them, and also read the lyrics as i have arranged them. Why? because I wanted to. Some tracks may be very hard to find, and some tracks have no lyrics. If I decide to share them sometime I will.

I finally used Myspace and Facebook ...

I have had account at those two places for some time, but never got into using them. I finally went ahead and contacted a few friends (or had a few contact me). I still don't see why people get all excited about those. Most of what people do seems completely pointless, and could be better accomplished in person, via telephone, or by e-mail. Granted I understand when people live a long ways away and want to use that to communicate - but it still seems like email would be quicker. I usually wait until I have an email telling me there is something in my account before I go check it. If that something was just in my email I'd save time.

As far as sharing pictures etc - I think a personal website would do the trick.

But I guess I'll use those places only because others are forcing me to if I want to interact with them. Maybe I'll re-think my interaction with such people .....

Soriano out for a month

That will definitely hurt the cubbies. Hopefully they can stay afloat until he gets back.

I will get to go see the cubs in Colorado this weekend. I also get to do some golfing friday afternoon. It has been several weeks since I went golfing.

In other news Rumors are flying that Directv will be picking up The MTN (mountain West conference sports network) and adding it to their sports tier in mid August. I called Directv customer service to try and verify for myself. The rep I spoke with was named Steven. When I asked him if Directv had plans to add the MTN he said that they would be adding it this year before the football season starts, but he couldn't give an exact date.

While I am very hopeful to be receiving the MTN on Directv, I am still in a wait and see mode. I know he told me they would get it, but until I see an official release I am not holding my breath.

Using the new Simpsonizeme.com website I created myself as a simpsons character. So ... This is me ... not 100%, but thats ok.

Cubs continue to roll

The cubs have now won 4 in a row, and are keeping the pressure on the Brewers. The cubs also picked up Jason Kendall from the A's. Kendall is slumping this year, but is a lifetime .298 hitter, and should fit in well with the cubs. It give some good experience behind home plate.

Baseball All-Star Break

Today is the last games before the All Star break. The cubs have finally started playing well. They are 4.5 games back in the division, and 3 games back in the wild card. Hopefully they win today and keep some momentum to start the 10 game home stand.

What this also means is that tomorrow and Wednesday are sports "Dead Days" The only days when no major sports are played. No baseball, no football, no basketball, and no hockey ... Tuesday we at least have the all star game.

Welcome to July

July has finally come. The cubs are playing very well. They took 2 of 3 from the brew crew, and have won 8 of the last 9. Hopefully they will keep winning into the all star break.

I got to try out my new driver on Saturday morning. I like it very much. I am able to get more distance with the driver, and it feels better in my hands. I still need to work on my twisting my wrists and opening my club face and slicing the ball.

My brother and his family arrived yesterday. I hadn't seen some of them in quite a long time.
